Many of you have most likely seen the increase in the number of shows about weight loss and obesity. I have to say im disgusted. Isn’t the whole idea of TV for entertainment?? Why are people entertained by the struggle men and women have with their weight. They go on these TV shows and commit to absurd diets and extremely excessive excercise regimines. So its ok for somebody overweight to have unhealthy weight loss? I thought that anybody who needs to lose weight is supposed to do it in a healthy way…???
I do commend MTV because on their show “I used to be fat” they do have a note at the start of the show that says that all of the teens featured have been medically cleared for weight loss, however i dont think that working out till you puke is ever considered healthy weightloss. I understand that they need to lose weight but why cant they go about it in a moderated healthy way? This is what all doctors recommend and i would love to speak to the doctor who cleared a teen to workout eight hours a day for 100 days in a row!!!!!
Moreover, these teens then lose the weight, but what about the psychological issues that they have with eating that led them to be obese??? Sure they can lose weight, anybody can do that, but what about the issues that cause them to overeat? I dont think their workout coaches are very concerned with that. To be honest, these people do not need a tv show, THEY NEED A THERAPIST AND NUTRITIONIST. They need to work through issues just like anybody with any sort of eating disorder, no matter what end of the weight spectrum they are on.
These shows are doing the equivalent of having an anorexic be forced to eat till she gains weight and then left on her own…..that would go over really well!
